Area stormwater and emergency management contacts,

This is a heads up regarding the potential for rapid river ice formation due to very cold temperatures this weekend. River ice may lead to ice jams and flooding in some locations.

A very cold airmass moves into the area by Friday and will stay in place into next week. Current forecasted temperatures near, or exceed, the general thresholds for rapid river ice formation in all area river basins. River ice can lead to ice jams and possible localized flooding, sometimes with little advanced warning. Several rivers in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana have a history of ice jams during similar conditions. It is difficult to determine specific areas most at risk of flooding, however, due to the localized nature of ice jams.

No additional notification emails are scheduled at this time.
